The process is very similar to sanding a piece of wood. The stone is sanded with coarse abrasive diamond grits, followed by a finer and finer grit until the stone becomes smooth. The scratches left behind from one grit are removed by the next, creating a finer and finer scratch. The process continues until the scratches are microscopic. The shine on the stone is achieved by abrading the stone surface to the point at which it becomes extremely smooth and starts to develop some reflectivity, thus leaving your stone surface new again.

A Marble restoration procedure typically takes 5 steps:
- Lippage removal or flattening:The step consists of grinding and leveling the floor, even newly installed marble tile floors can have some unleveled tiles. This step removes all ledges, roughness and brings flatness to stone surfaces. Also, this step can remove the deepest scratches and stains.
- Honing: Honing is the step of restoring and providing a smooth matte look on the surface of the stone. Industrial diamond pads are used in this process to smooth out any bumps on the stone surface. Honing will also remove scratches, stains and give a more uniform appearance. In some cases honing is all that’s needed to get your stone looking spectacular again.
- Polishing: It gives a semi-shine or a shine effect on the stone surface. A stone polishing is done by industrial diamonds in higher grits than honing grits. For stone surfaces in a good condition, a polish can be enough to bring back the shine.
- Crystallization or Buffing:Is a method of refinishing and bringing out a fresh layer of stone with a “mirror-like” shine by chemical reaction on the surface of the stones. Crystallization also creates a microfilm on the surface of the stone, which is more solid and durable and helps to preserve the color and the brightness of the stone. It is a very good method for regular stone maintenance.
- Sealing or Stain Proofing:There is much truth in the saying, – “to prevent is better than to cure” – and this does not apply just to one’s health, the same applies when dealing with marble and granite. To ensure a long-term, durable, efficient, finish of your stones, seal the surfaces regularly. A Stone sealant creates a protective barrier on the surface of your stone that repels liquids and keeps spills and watermarks from absorbing and damaging your stone.
