Travertine is a natural sedimentary stone formed through the transformation of limestone. It is created when mineral rich water passes through limestone deposits, dissolving calcium carbonate and later re crystallizing as carbon dioxide is released at the earth’s surface. Over time, this process forms layered stone with natural voids and distinctive texture known as travertine.
Travertine’s primary components, calcite and gypsum, are naturally colorless. The warm tones commonly associated with travertine, such as gold, beige, brown, and yellow, result from trace minerals and organic material present during formation.
Travertine is easily recognized by its natural holes and voids, which range from small pinholes to larger irregular cavities. Once quarried and cut into tiles or slabs, these voids may be filled with grout or epoxy fillers, or left unfilled for a more rustic appearance.
With a hardness rating of approximately 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, travertine is softer than granite but slightly denser than marble. It is available in a wide range of finishes, including honed, polished, brushed, tumbled, chiseled, filled, and unfilled, making it a versatile design material.
Travertine has been used for centuries in architecture and construction. Many historic Roman structures, including the Colosseum, were built using travertine due to its availability, durability, and workability.
